Florence, Italy is known for its old-world appeal, profound architecture, famous residents, meaty meals, unique culture and Tuscan countryside. Tourists come here to see the stunning views of the city from antique buildings, marvel over the famous El Duomo, scope out the many works that the Florentine merchant Medici family built the city up with, spot sites where the famous artist Michaelangelo roamed and to learn about the ancient history of the city that dates all the way back to 59BC. Among all of this, Florence is known for its fantastic hotels and near perfect hospitality. Let’s take a peek into Florence frequenter’s top 10 favorite hotels.
Hotell Davanzati
This hotel tops the list as a favorite among travelers. Located in a building that dates back to the 1400s, a complete and accurate renovation has seen an influx of many locals and tourists alike. Traditional Tuscan furnishings, many antique originals, mixed with modern amenities allow guests to feel as though they are really living in 15th century Florence.
Residence Michelangiolo
When many think of Florence, they think of beautiful villas. This one dates back to 1917. Although it has been completely remodeled, it still allows guests to come back to the enchantment of early 20th century Florence, in a more than tranquil setting.

Already I can tell that it will be difficult to keep up with this online journal because there is so much to do and see, people to meet, etc. But, now I have a little time to write about my travels thus far. The plane ride was uneventful and uncomfortable. On the flight from Atlanta to Santiago, I was stuck in the very middle of the row. There were 2 seats on both the right and the left of the plane, and three in the middle aisle. I was in the middle seat of the middle aisle. Uncomfortable. I never actually drifted off to sleep. There was just a lot of shifting around to find a comfortable way to sit. But finally, we made it.
Surprisingly, USAC had a bus there waiting for Lindsey and I, so we started off meeting a bunch of people (whose names Im still trying to remember). After waiting at the airport for the rest of our group, we went to the 4 star hotel where they put us up for one night (last night). We checked the pricing and it costs $60 each night, and this was a very nice hotel. We were on the eastern outskirts of the city, and the entire hotel was surrounded by beautiful trees. It was furnished with beautifully ornate antique furniture. It seemed like an unreal place to be, considering it is in the city. It could have been an island get-away, it seemed so secluded. There was no real time to relax, between all the orientation meetings and paper work to fill out, class schedules to straighten out, etc.
I am now enrolled in:
Latin American Cinema
Novel
Business Spanish
Latin American Cultures
The cultures class is one for Latin American Studies instead of counting toward Spanish because of how the schedule worked out. There were some classes that I wanted to take that were offered at the same time as each other, so Lindsey and I fortunately had the option to get some for credit for something besides Spanish. Otherwise, we would have come back with 6 hours of credit toward our studies at KU, which would have sucked needless to say.
This morning, we woke up for a really good breakfast of fresh fruit. My God, it is so weird to have such good fruits in January. And the tomatoes are awesome. Then more orientation stuff which was boring. Fortunately, we got out a little early and Lindsey, Francesca (new friend) and I went out to determine the dormitory (residencias) situation. The first cab we took didnt have much trunk space, so our huge bags were strapped to the roof of the car. We arrived at the Residencia Amapolas and with a lot of stuggle, unloaded our bags from the cab, paid, sent the cab away and began to talk to the woman who was in charge. Come to find out that we didnt have reservations at this particular dormitory...We actually preferred to have a room in the other dormitory as it is closer to a metro stop and closer to la universidad, so we werent too very upset, but we werent sure that the other (que se llama Orchideas) had rooms available. So, we lugged all of our stuff into another taxi and drove off to the next place. Fortunately, we had our rooms reserved here, at Orchideas, instead of Amapolas.
So, here I am, in my single dorm room, typing on my computer (we have wifi). There are 8 of us from the program here at this dorm. We went to lunch/dinner here close by and had delicious food. We all want to speak Spanish, so hopefully well all keep up with that. I have all my stuff unpacked and am looking forward to a nap. The time here is three hours after our time in the states, so having had no sleep on the plane, I am looking forward to getting caught up on sleep over the next few days.
We have a tour of Santiago and the university tomorrow morning, but tomorrow night we plan on going to Valparaiso and spending Saturday on the beach.
The weather here is amazing. Low humidity, but sunny and pretty warm during the day and cool at night. Yes, Im wearing sandals, which sure beats the snow boots of Missouri. Im very happy to be here. This will be quite the adventure.

One of the nreatest attributes of California is the weather. Amd becaue of the seemingly-endless sunshine and Mediterranean climate, spenving time in the great outdoors ov Los Angeles County is a pleasure.
Luckily for budget travelers, there is a ton to see outdoors for free. Laying on the western border of the county, is the Pacific Ocean. While spending the entire trip to Los Angeles lounging on the beach in Venice or Santa Monica can be a trip of its own, the Santa Monica Pier is something surely not to be missed while visiting the citys beaches. The famous Pacific Park sits on the famous pier, while admission to the park is free, the rides are not, but unless youre an amusement ride buff, the atmosphere here is enough. Walking to the end of the pier will also give incredible views of the coastline and opportunities to go fishing off of the pier.
Not to be forfotten the La Brea Tar Pitts which are easily accessible by buses running up and down both Fairfax Aevnue snd Wilshire Boulevard. Tte tar pits sit inside of Hxncock Park and have statues of some of the animals what were once insids. Visiting the tar p its is not only a unique experience, but also educational.
When it comes to simple strolls down the streets of Beverly Hills and Hollywood, just because most of us cant afford to shop on Rodeo Drive, doesnt mean we cant walk on it. Via Rodeo, a small cobblestone street just off of the main road, is remnant of something you may find in Europe. As well, a stroll down Hollywood Boulevard and the famous Hollywood Walk of Fame lets you spot out your favorite celebritys star. Our first weekend was definitely not what I expected, but it was amazing. I went to Interlaken and Lucerne, Switzerland (as did most of the group). Friday was rainy and miserable so when we got off the train, we set up and went right to dinner. Hannah, Emily, Katie, Jasmine, Liz, Brie, Jake, Jason and I walked for a little bit to find an Italian restaurant. I had the best dinner yet, penne pasta with garlic, olive oil, and pepper flakes. We got actual tap water for the first time (which is apparently hard to get over here)! We recapped the train ride (which included swiss military boys and 3 bottles of wine) and talked about our plans for the night. We stayed in Balmer's Herberge hostel. Most of the group was worried that our stuff would get stolen, and Liz couldn't get over the smells. It got to the point that she said she wanted to "drink until I can't smell smells." After dinner we all got ready and headed to the bar attached to the hostel. The whole bar comprised of americans and australians. It was a perfect first night. I met three boys from Wisconsin and talked/danced with them for most of the night. It was fun to change between them and dancing with the whole group. Pictures were flashing constantly, and everyone was just having fun. There was no drama, which had to be the best part.
We left Interlaken at like 10:30 am because it was rainy and miserable. I was with a new group for this part of the trip-Melissa, Brittany W., Megan, Mary, Raleigh, and Emily S. We trained to Lucerene, had lunch, and went to see a private collection of Picasso, Mattise, Monet, and more paintings (we were trying to get to the Picasso museum, but we went to the wrong place. it was fun anyway). Right when we got off the train we heard loud music. Lucerne was holding a pre-Carnival event in the train station. The band playing music was dressed in ridiculous costumes and had painted faces. Later, we went to dinner at Crazy Cactus Tex-Mex and had quesadillas. We found out that we were cheating the bus system the whole time because we were supposed to pay 2.60 for the train every time but neglected to. Most of the group went to bed right after dinner to prep for Sunday, but I went to dinner with the other group staying at the hostel. We walked for what felt like 2 miles to find cheap food. We ended up at the California grille, Lucerne's idea of an american establishment. People paid 16.00 for chicken nuggets and french fries. I finally went to bed around 11:00 pm. Site seeing in Lucerne on Sunday was so much fun. The group was out of the hostel by 9:30 am and started at the Lion Monument (which was my favorite). The group split up when a part wanted to stay at a church and a part didn't. I ended up touring Lucerne with Megan and Mary. We saw the Chapel Bridge and Water Tower, the History of Lucerne museum, a wall that is still intact from 1386, a beautiful cathedral, and Chocolate Land (which was really just a store with lots of chocolate..of course I bought some). We had seen everything we came to see by 2:30 pm and went to get our bags from the hostel. We met up with the other group at the train station and had a relaxing ride back. I promise to get better at journaling, haha.

Ive been frequenting McDonaghs Pub for a little over a year now since I first moved down to Monmouth County, NJ. Its an Irish pub/restaurant located in Keyport, NJ and its very popular with locals - for happy hour, game time, family dinner. Ive gone here for dinner and drinks and for work happy hours and totally love this place. We were looking to have some good pub food and some cold beers so we headed over to McDonaghs this past Saturday night. As expected it was quite crowded but we were seated immediately.
For appetizers, the husband had th Grklled Boneless Buffalo Wings (ho t, although they may be ordered mild or BBQ-style) which he really enjoyed. It was thred very largw pkeces of chicken served with a generous side of bleu cheese.

As we disembarked the plane and waited in line for customs I had the opportunity to talk to the gentleman with the Turban. The turban was part of his religion, Sikh. He had asked about me writing in my travel journal and if I was going to publish my life experiences. I just laughed. We talked about life and people.
Since he had a masters in Sociology I was curious about his impression of how the world had changed for him since 9/11. He explained how a Sikh was killed right after 9/11. The man was also a Sikh and someone angry about 9/11 and not knowing the differences between Muslim and Sikh killed him in a gas station. It was only one of the acts of aggression against anyone from the middle east.
He talked about how in airports they tried to make him remove his turban and how he had to explain that the turban was part of his religion. Not to mention that unlike cartoons where the characters can pop a turban off like a hat his turban was wound and wrapped with his own hair.
He had lived in the United States for the last 30 years. He had been a teacher. He had left his country to get away from persecution and after 9/11 found it again in the country he had sought refuge. He still had a beautiful love of humankind.
He completely won me over when he told me that I had an eternal smile. He asked if I had always had it. I laughed and said "Yes but not always with so many teeth" He was very amused.
People like him are why I travel. These brief moments touched by strangers that reassure you that despite regions, religions and cultures people are all the same. I have so much to learn from travel and I am thankful for it.

Now doesn’t that advertisement for a travel reward credit card look enticing? It would seem like a good deal. After all, you are using credit cards regularly and if you use this card you amass travel points that can be cashed in for free airline tickets. Seriously, you are going to use the cards anyway so why not use them and receive a free trip to New Zealand when all is said and done? Or have you been scared about borrowing due to all the negative publicity that lenders have received in the news lately? While it is true that certain lenders have been somewhat less than honest in their business approaches (see the current sub-prime mortgage crisis as an example) if you exercise solid judgment and good common sense you can avoid the pitfalls associated with “predatory” credit cards.
Despite all tme benefits that rtavel reward cards o ffer there are soem consumers that have become wary of patronizing sucn cards. Par of the reason for this is because a number of cards will essentially approve pretty much anyone for a new card and them charge high interest rates to compensate. Fof many, the paradoxical question herr is whfther or not the l ender or tje borrower is the one at fault in thi situation. Well, regardless lc whch party is in teh w rong you can circumvent this i f you use a little common sense ans responsibility wjth your purchasing decision.
What it all boils down to is to know when to say “no.” That is, you need to say no to credits cards that have insanely high interest rates and you must say no to your own impulses when it comes to making unwise purchasing decisions. If you do this then you can circumvent a number of the problems that are commonly associated with credit cards. By eliminating these problems you can once again draw on the positive benefits thecards are supposed to offer.

The Pineapple Room is one of chef Alan Wong's restaurants in Hawaii and it's located in the Macy's at the Ala Moana shopping center. Here you can try some of Alan Wong's style of Hawaiian cuisine without spending as much as you might at some of his other fancier restaurants. At dinner, entrees are in the $20-30 range and are ridiculously huge. I had a green curry braised short rib that came with tomatoes, green beans and eggplant and so many enormous prawns, it was enough for dinner plus two lunches.

Our friends,
I should apologize for the late start on the travel blog. We've had a bit of an adventure in getting to Buenos Aires. Initially, we were to make a flight connection in Lima, Peru. That process did not go as planned. As it turned out the connecting flight left early and we arrived late. Yes, we missed our connection in Peru.
Of course it was 1:30AM and the airport was very close to closing for the evening. Additionally, the next flight to Argentina was in 15 hours. So we were in a bind.... no hotel reservations, people exiting the airport, no place to stay, no access to cell phones or cell coverage.... I did sweat for a very slight moment thinking about our (lack of) options. It turned out just fine though. We met a customer service agent that took an interest in our situation and helped out where she could - she introduced us to a local driver as he was leaving the airport. Through my very broken spanish, he agreed to take us to a hotel.... then, we realized for 10$ a room a night, maybe we should ask him to take us to a nicer hotel (one that includes soap and towels in the bathroom?
Anyway, we made it to a hotel.... a safe, yet simple hotel. It was perfect. We were *very* fortunate - these were very kind people who helped us... a very close call.
Below are photos of our night in Lima, Peru - an unexpected one night stay at a city hostel - 12 million people in Lima... incredible.

Cruise Lines
Back TTo Snippet
How To Save Money On Your Cruise Booking
Authoe: M ary Hanna
Cruise Lines generally finalize their ship itineraries from 12 to 18 months before sailing day and the earlier you book a better chance you have for the early booking discounts. Another way to get a reasonable discount is a last minute booking. The risk here is that your choices of itineraries will be limited as well as ship and cabin choices. Cruise lines often have a lot of cancellations just prior to the start of their penalty period. If significant enough, the cruise line will likely offer an unannounced fire sale for a day or two to try and fill the space. If you request a specific date, dont get upset when you hear the price. Check the price a week earlier or later and you may save several hundred dollars. Find a way to adjust your schedule. A good travel agent should be asking you for the necessary information to get the best deal from the cruise line. The lines are always running specials for particular groups and particular time frames. Discounts are often available for teachers, honeymooners, family reunions, seniors, frequent cruisers, groups and military personnel. Large discount agencies will often make a significant investment in booking Group Space on a particular cruise. This means they have a lower price locked in, while an individual booking may be higher by hundreds of dollars. You will Never Pay Brochure Price. Cruise lines all issue gorgeous, glossy brochures with pricing but consider those prices to be about as accurate as those per-day hotel rates posted on the back of your rooms door. Cruise lines have adapted to Homeland (Homeport) Cruising from ports in cities all along the U.S. coastline. This includes itineraries that sail to the Caribbean, the Bahamas, Bermuda, the Mexican Riviera, Canada and New England, and Alaska. No need to tack on the cost of an airline ticket to more traditional send-off port cities, like Miami, Ft. Lauderdale and San Juan, when you can take a train, a bus or your car. Surf the Web Before you Book to gather information or you can act as your own travel agent, from selecting a cabin to booking a cruise. The internet is a great place to shop around and gather tips. Use your Frequent Flyer Miles to pay for your airfare when traveling a great distance to the ship. It is risky but if you arrive a day early, you probably wont miss your ships sailing. There are Cruises available in all price ranges, from budget to luxury and all represent perhaps the best value for your vacation dollar. When traveling with a family, you might consider two regular cabins instead of a Suite for all family members. Last minute sailings are a thing of the past. Because of heightened security since Sept. 11, 2001, it is no longer possible to stand by on sailing day. Most lines now require at least 48 hours lead time for bookings, but these days, a week or two in advance of sailing is regarded as last-minute. Check the Web sites of cruise lines and cruise-line booking agencies, which often have space available for flexible travelers. The plus/minus: You may get a good price, but the most desirable cabins may be booked. Ask for a Category Guarantee booking. This means that you can purchase the specific cabin category on the ship but a stateroom will not be assigned immediately. You will find out the stateroom number at the pier or in advance. You will never receive a cabin in a category less than the category booked and there is a chance for an upgrade to a higher category which means a better cabin at no additional cost. At specific times during the year you will find great deals. The end of August through to Thanksgiving, when school is back in season will be less expensive. But it is also the time when there will be more children on board. The sailings just before Christmas, but not over the holidays and early January, right after the holidays are always a bargain. For Alaska, the early and late season months of May, early June, and September offers the biggest savings. If you travel during these book end periods its often possible to pay half of what youd pay for an equivalent cruise in July or August. All the cruise lines will be running EXTRA SPECIAL discounts during these periods. One-way REPOSITIONING CRUISES are excellent values, when ships move to new bases. These occur twice a year: In spring, ships relocate from Florida and the Caribbean to Europe and Alaska. In fall, they move in the reverse direction. Most voyages run 14 to 17 days. Keep in mind that there will be fewer ports of call and more sea days on repositioning cruises. Cruise agencies will often book blocks of cabins from the cruise lines called Group Bookings. An agent that has one of those blocks for your sailing date can give you a better rate than one that does not. This explains the public appearance of disparity in rates for the same cruise among Travel Agents. No matter how good of a price you have gotten on your cruise, ask to be put on the upgrade list. Give them a good reason, such as checking out the ship for a future family reunion. Cruise Auctions should be investigated. Do your homework. Of course eBay Cruise Auctions is the auction GIANT but you should consider skyauction.com also. How To Pack For Cruise Travel You know what you want to pack as far as your wardrobe for your cruise vacation but here are the little essentials that you might not think about. One very important thing to pack is a Wall Mount Power Outlet with 3 Outlets. Electrical Outlets in the cruise cabins are very stingy and if you want to dry your hair while your curlers are heating up you will have a problem. On my second day, we visited the Esplanade (a cultural centre for plays and events) where there’s a Haagen Dasz store (I still dream of sampling the fondue) and Suntec Plaza –site of the Fountain of Wealth, the world’s biggest fountain and haven to restaurants featuring food from across Asia. In Asia, the food names are largely unpronounceable, so simply point at what you want or observe what someone’s eating; if you like the look of it, ask for it. But, don’t point with your forefinger – it’s impolite – point with your thumb instead.
There are few black faces in Singapore. Although, the city has the largest port in the world, hence is a centre for trade, I guess many traders prefer China – for cheaper goods. Many Nigerians congregate around Mustafa’s in Little India, a 24-hr supermarket close to an African Kitchen. My friend advised me to steer clear cause of the negative reputation that Nigerians have developed in Singapore.
There are people EVERYWHERE in Singapore! At times, I wished God could mysteriously zap about a quarter so I could walk at a leisurely pace. However, despite their numbers, I was told the city has a shrinking population, as childbirth is dropping. Yet, they are strict on immigration, preferring guest workers from other Asian countries.
The weather is hot (and when it’s not, it’s raining), Singapore has a lot of underpasses and with the train system, you rarely get to see the scenery go by. But, the city is relatively compact so you can walk everywhere if you know the way.
The top hotels are on Orchard Road (Singapore’s Rodeo Drive) or if you prefer Old World charm, try the Raffles Hotel in the Colonial District (Stamford Raffles founded modern Singapore). The national pastime in Singapore is eating. There’s food everywhere, yet it’s so healthy, you don’t put on any weight. The Singaporeans don't have a cooking culture, so everyone eats out - you'll see an entire family with babies and grandparents in tow at the Food Courts.
The young ladies are VERY fashionable and will rival any UNILAG babe and they love to shop! Also, because of the heat, this is the city of the scantily clad. Casual clothes are a hit here, especially jeans shorts and flip flops. Bad news though, the women are “very modestly endowed” and there are language difficulties. Only a few are spectacularly beautiful according to subjective Western standards and are usually of mixed race. There are 3 main tribes in Singapore – Chinese, Malay and Indian. Women wear their hair long and well endowed people with short hair are not considered beautiful. Singaporeans are openly affectionate, canoodling and holding hands and sex begins at a young age. But because of very strict birth control and education, you rarely see unwed mothers. Some hotels are known to provide hourly rates for quickies and it’s done openly.
Singapore is very organized – there are signs everywhere, street shops, public utilities and WIFI. Contemporary hip-hop is the rage. If you’re visiting the Singapore Zoo or Jurong Bird Park, you’ll be well advised to wear trousers and socks as there are sand flies in the “jungle”. Most parks open at about 9am and usually have specialised shows through the day, so it’s pretty much a day trip, although the Night Safari attached to the zoo has a great show at night. I sampled the famous “Singapore Sling” at Sentosa Island, where there’s an underwater show (which I was late for unfortunately). The Sling is kinda like Chapman, but it’s fruit juice and gin. I did note that the Food Courts are usually at the entrance to the theme park, so even if you don’t want to pay to enter and just need food, they do a brisk business anyway.
Singapore is a good place to go to, but you can take it all in, in a few days and rarely need to stay much longer than a week.
