Could the land of Hollywood movie stars and a larger than life “Terminator” Governor be the birth place of legal online poker in 2009? If a bill penned by Assemblyman Lloyd Levine is passed, then the answer is yes. Called the Gambling Control/California Intrastate Online Poker Act, the bill seeks to study the ability of the state to protect Californians by licensing and regulating intrastate poker websites”.
Originally introduced in February the bill has been put in the inactive legislative file so that the original author can add some pizzazz to the bill with more authors and gain some traction in 2009. Since this bill was born in California, who hosts a large number of live card rooms (such as the Bicycle Casino and Bay 101) it may just have the legs to finish this race. If passed it would be a landmark achievement for the online poker industry and possibly allow rooms such as Full Tilt Poker to operate legally in the US for the first time.
With California in a budget deficit this could be the cash injection needed to help soothe tensions with many residents and Governor Schwarzenegger. There’s a big debate right now over his refusal to lower many prison guards pay to near minimum wage levels. Perhaps by legalizing and regulating online poker the additional tax revenue could prevent this.
Regardless, the bill has a ways to go before it’s passed and it’s essentially a study. If passed though, it may lead the way for the rest of us non-Californians to enjoy the game of online poker legally in our homes.

I know, I know I havent been posting enough lately. Im not happy about it either,  but I have good reasons. Honest!
Most of June/July was been spent moving house, my girlfriend Kate and I decided to take the plunge recently and move in together. We bought a nice little place just outside the city and have been busy painting, carpeting, electrifying and furnishing the place ever since. Its time consuming work but I do enjoy a bit of DIY.
Then at the start of July myself, Kate and her family headed off to Falls Creek for a full week of fun in the snow. Id never been skiing before and at the start of the week I was struggling to even stand up but by the end I attempted (and conquered) my first black run! Id forgotten how much fun it can be to learn a new skill and Ill definitely be back next season, its a great way to spend some time away.  When youre up at the top of the mountain its like youre in another world (this is best illustrated by the fact a bowl of hot chips at the top of the main chair lift costs an offensive AUD$12.50) and its great to just disconnect from the rest of the world and relax.
Thats not to say I didnt play a little poker, on the Monday night we were up there the Australian Poker League was running one of their tournaments at one of the local pubs called The Frying Pan Inn. To be honest going in I was more interested in having a few beers than playing a pub freeroll tournament but as the pints flowed I started chatting and joking with the other players at my table and had a great time and after I made the first break I decided to actually try and go deep in the thing.
And go deep I did, managing 6th overall in what was pretty much a crapshoot of a final table given the fast structure of these things. Great fun though.
Highlight:
Requesting one more beer at the start of the final table only to be challenged by Kate to double up and then you can have one. I proceed to get dealt pocket 10s the first hand and do just that. Mines a Coopers Sparkling Ale thanks!
Lowlight:
Going out in 6th with the blinds at 10,000/20,000 and a stack of around 80,000 I open and push wth ATo trying to get heads up with the blinds who were desperately short. The big stack on the button (who, how can I put it nicely? Lets say hes been getting quite lucky) calls with 64o and Im out when he spikes his 6 on the river.
As always though, I thanked the tourney organisers and shook my opponents hand before heading out into the snow for the walk home. Was a fun night, and an even better week. Kinda sucks to be back home.

In the ever stranger world of Leisure and Gaming (LNG) we previous posted an article commenting on a rumour that Henry Birch was leaving. This was unsubstantiated at the time but clearly the rumour was correct or the reasons behind the rumour were so compelling that LNG saw that this was inevitable.

What it goes to show is "watch the netbetblog space". As predicted however, the departure did not have a positive effect on the share price. Changing leaders is not always the best move but with the strategic investors wanting a larger piece of the action it was inevitable.

Chief Executive and Directorate Change

Leisure Gaming plc today announces that following the successful turnaround of the
Company to a stable and profitable position, chief executive Henry Birch has decided to step down from the Board to pursue other interests. The Company is pleased to announce that Richard Creed, Leisure Gaming's current chief financial officer, has been appointed Chief Executive.

The Company's finance function will continue to be overseen by Richard Creed with the assistance of Paul Milburn, the finance director of the Betshop Group (the Company's main subsidiary).

Trading and Operational Developments

As announced on 11th July, trading for the first half of the year has been line with
market expectations with an estimated EBIT for the period of EUR1.2m. The Company expects to have its full estate of Italian shops operating under new Bersani licences by the start of the football season in mid-August, and also expects to be able to offer online poker throughout its retail network and to Italian customers
online before the end of the year.

The Company will continue to focus its efforts on growing the business in the Italian
market, where based on turnover it is the largest foreign owned betting operator, and overall fourth largest betting operator, with 470 retail outlets.

Henry Birch, outgoing Chief Executive of Leisure Gaming said:

"With the Company successfully restructured post-UIGEA and returned to profitability and stability, I feel the time is right for new challenges. We are very fortunate to have in Richard Creed, an experienced and effective executive with strong sector experience, who can continue to grow the Company and take it to its next stage of development. Hi, the World Series of Poker 2008 (wsop) finally reached the Main Event and more important is that it reached the interesting instances of the tournament. Second days into the final table of the wsop 2008 main event.
First 4 qualifying days are over. Most of the Pros got eliminated on this days and imho there was a problem with the days organization, since the 4 days where played one after another.
Means that people couldnt rest properly. You could only play day 1a and day 1c, or day 1b and day 1d. Etc. Humoungous failure at the wsop organization.
