Trip to Argentina

Going to Argentina was an adventure. We decided to take our kids on a backpacking adventure to Patagonia. The worries were many: would the kids get too tired? Would we get transportation for the places we wanted? Would we be able to get to the south and come back in 14 days?

Well, we started off in Buenos Aires, we got to the hostel 30 minutes before New Years day and joined a celebration which was going on at the rooftop of the hostel. It was amazingly hot (37ºC at night) and believe it or not the water had finished so we had to have a shower using a water bottle. That night we decided to move south as soon as we could. We spent a day in Buenos Aires (BA) and took a bus to Puerto Madryn in order to see penguins and sea elephants, it was not the whale season yet. The weather in Puerto Madryn was VERY WINDY and a bit cold. The tour to see the sea animals was fantastic, we had a great time. After Puerto Madryn we decided to move more towards the south, our aim was El Calafate, but as there were no direct buses we had to go to Rio Gallegos first and then get another bus to Calafate. The town is very charming and the hostel was very good with the only disadvantage of letting people smoke in the hostel. In Calafate we got a tour to see the Perito Moreno Glacier. The view of the Glacier is one of the most beautiful things Ive seen in my life. Here we reached the middle of our trip. From there we started going north through the famous route 40, reaching El Chaltén first. El Chaltén is the capital of trekking in Argentina. People from all over the world go there for trekking and mountain climbing. The village is located inside a National Park and is a place Id definitely visit again. As we were tired by then we went on a short trek (3 hours) up the mountain. Going up was hard but manageable and the view makes it all worthwhile. This was a long tiring trip north towards Bariloche. We got to Bariloche at 23:00 and to our surprise they had cancelled our reservation because we hadnt confirmed it 24 hours in advance (How could we? On a bus?). The hostels were all full and we had to stay at the only hotel they found for us and pay 4 times what we had planned. The weather in Bariloche was incredibly cold for us (6ºC) but the kids loved it. We went up Cerro Catedral (a ski station) by cable car which was a highlight for the kids and a tense moment for me (hahaaha). We stayed there for 2 days and got another bus back to Buenos Aires to get ready to come back home.

All in all, I could say I saw wonderful things I hadnt imagined. Although we spent many hours in buses (good ones by the way) we had a chance to really see and feel the Patagonia, its extension, its nature, its beauty. The only thing I pity was the impossibility to meet my Argentinian net friends (Gladys, Nelba, Gabriella and Carla R). With such a tight schedule we ended up not meeting :( . Well, maybe another time.

This is a slideshow Ive made with pictures we took, hope you like them.

Well, when I left off I was still in Chile finishing up my kayaking week. It was a great week but a little bit frustrating because the kayaking didnt come as easy as I wanted it to. And, we all know how frustrated I get when I am not good at something right away. Its not that I was horrible. I mean, I can get in the boat and paddle and get myself from one spot to another. I can even roll when I am in the calm, flat water (not all the time, but I did roll at least a dozen times by myself). But, I was a bit timid on the river and when I actually got on the river, I flipped the boat... a lot. When that happens you have three options. The optimal option is to roll. (Read above: I dont have a roll.)The next best option is to wait for your instructor and stay in the boat while upside down and use his boat to right yourself. The third and least preferred option is to pull the cord and swim. Well, my choice was always to pull the cord and swim because I got freaked out being attached to my kayak and upside down in rapidly moving water. Swimming is the least preferred option of course because you then find yourself in freezing cold, fast-moving water needing to swim to shore. Your instructor needs to secure your boat and then meet you on the riverside, upright your boat, dump out the water, get you back in your boat, etc. etc. I swam many times. It is nervewracking and cold and very tiring. All that being said, I am certainly not done with kayaking. I have to give it a chance and some time. This summer I will revisit and take the time to get on the water more which is really what I need. Not to mention, I was in Chile, it was incredibly beautiful and you cant really beat having your first time in a whitewater kayak be in Chile.

We headed off for Argentina on Sunday evening. It was kind of a rushed departure because the Christmas holiday put a wrench in travel plans. We werent sure what would be running as far as buses, etc. were concerned. So, we took a taxi from Futa, across the border to the little hippie town of El Bolson. The story of getting to the hostel was a true South American travel story. By the time we reached El Bolson it was about 10:00 at night and pitch black. We had made reservations at the hostel Altos del Sur. (Highly recommended for anyone wanting a hostel in El Bolson, Argentina. Check out their website. Altos del Sur) We had an address for the place but no real directions. I didnt expect it to be too difficult to find the place. Well, it turns out, it was. The taxi driver asked about three people where it was. Finally someone was able to direct us to the correct road. The road was dirt, rutted, and steep. We continued up the mountainside and continued, gaining altitude and distance from town etc. Finally we looked at each other and considered having him just take us back to town to find a place on our own. But, he was pretty determined to find the place. Finally we gave him one last chance (itw now been about 45 minutes Id say of looking) and he stopped at this house that had lights on. He honked his horn and someone came out. The taxi driver asked the man if he knew where the hostel was and the man did. Instead of just giving directions he hopped in the car and drove with us all the way to the top of the mountain. Never in the United States would that happen. The hostel ended up being worth it. The people were very welcoming and they had delicious raspberry jam for breakfast. We spent the morning drinking our first decent coffee of the trip looking out over the mountains and the city below and I think I was extremely relaxed. It was nice to be on our own schedule for once and not the kayak schedule. We spent the day in town and it was HOT. Hotter than in Chile. We got some groceries to make dinner that night and breakfast the next morning. The next day, Christmas Day, we headed out for Bariloche. It certainly didnt seem like Christmas because it was so hot and we were headed on a bus to another new town in Argentina, but the fact that my family was celebrating Christmas together that day was certainly in the back of my mind. I wasnt sad. I was happy to be with Chip. I was happy to be in Argentina. I was happy to be off on a new adventure.

We arrived in Bariloche and decided it was better to stay there overnight since most everything was closed for Christmas and we needed gas for the stove, food, and some other gear. We found the first place that was open and had space, the Hotel Bariloche (not expecting that we would end up spending three nights there!). The rest of the day we putzed around, went swimming at the lake and had a delicious dinner of Lomo and Malbec. The next day we geared up and headed out to Villa Catedral and the start of our trek. It was later in the day by the time we started out so we decided (luckily) to take the ski lift up to the top of the mountain and to the start of our hike. I say luckily because it turns out the hike up would have been 4 hours and we still had 4 hours of hiking to do to get to our first destination. We trekked for three days and camped out two nights. It was tiring, a lot of ups and downs. But, to me it was beautiful. There is nothing like waking up in a tent and looking out to see huge snow capped peaks or to be nestled in among the trees like we were the second night. I was very much at peace during those three days When I wasnt huffing and puffing up the steep inclines. But, even that puts me at ease.

We arrived back in Bariloche on Friday and had planned to head immediately back to spend a couple of days in civilazation in Santiago before we both had to fly out. I was very much looking forward to actually doing my hair, wearing some makeup and dressing up and heading out on the town in Santiago. But, that didnt end up happening. It turns out it was rather difficult to get from Bariloche to Santiago. To make a long story short we ended up just waiting until Sunday to take the only flight for the week back to Santiago. When we arrived in Santiago, Chip had to basically check back in and head off to his flight back to the states. I stayed the night and had a early flight out the next morning. I was very sad to see him go. I was happy that I knew I was going back to Brasilia to see my friends, but it was extrememly difficult to let him go back to the states and not hop on a plane with him. I really enjoyed myself. We only touched the very surface of Chile and I know Id like to go back to explore and there are many more places in Argentina I want to visit. They will both go back on my list of places.
