the Kansas State Wildcats this Saturday will get the Sooners closer to their ultimate goal.
Sam Bradford may be the biggest key to the Sooners title chances as the sophomore ranks third in the FBS with 2,520 passing yards, second with 26 touchdowns and fifth with a 71.4 completion percentage.
Sam Bradford hopes to continue his success in his first career game against Kansas State. The Wildcats (4-3, 1-2) were held to a season-low point total in a 14-13 defeat at Colorado last Saturday.
They are averaging 23.3 points in their three losses compared to 50.8 in four wins.
Oklahoma has won five of its last six meetings with Kansas State to take a 68-17-4 advantage in the all-time series.

Boise State quarterback extraordinaire Kellen Moore was named the WACs offensive player of the week for his performance against Louisiana Tech on Wednesday. Tom Brandstater finished a distant 42nd.
For Moore, the award is his second of the season and marks the second time in Boise States last two games that he has been chosen as the conferences best player. With a less than daunting WAC schedule on the horizon, the redshirt freshman could be hearing his name plenty more over the next few weeks.
So the question now becomes: what is he doing with all of these awards? We would like to think that he has built himself a trophy case in his dorm room, next to the Steve Young poster and on top of the mini-fridge. But Moore doesnt seem like the type of person to wallow in his own greatness. (Zabransky on the other hand)
No, we imagine that he has started handing them out in the Quad to whatever lucky coed happens to be passing by. Either that or he carries them around in his pocket and whips them out to impress women. Want to see my Wendys National Player of the Week Award? Its got Dave Thomas bust on it.
Personally, we would like to start seeing some of this stuff on eBay because we got ourselves a PayPal gift certificate for our birthday and we have been waiting for just the right time to use it. That WAC Player of the Week certificate with the fake Karl Benson signature would look perfect on our mantle.

As I rounded the corner and the mall's parking lot came into view, I saw the neon-blue beams of multiple lightsabers slashing though the air. My initial thought was not how bizarre this was, but that the blades were the wrong shade - far too dark a hue. You would be hard-pressed to find such a crystal on the planet Ilum (snorting laughter). I had now entered familiar territory and quickly reverted to nerd-dom, but as I stood in line, waiting for my copy of the newest installment in the Star Wars universe, I became aware of just how my passion for the films, books, video games, etc., feigned in comparison to that of those around me. My level of fanaticism did not belong in the ring with these giants of sci-fi zeal.

Brian Murphy, Statesman auteur and pizza magnate, provides the reasoning for his weekly poll. Murphy was the only one to choose Alabama as the No. 1 team in the land. Does he know something that the rest of us dont? If so, hes not afraid to reveal all. Read on:
1. Alabama
2. Oklahoma
3. LSU
4. Missouri
5. Texas
6. Penn State
7. Texas Tech
8. BYU
9. South Florida
10. USC

18. Auburn
19. Oklahoma State
20. Wisconsin
21. Fresno State
22. Virginia Tech
23. Connecticut
24. Northwestern
25. Ball State
Also considered: Oregon, Michigan State, Wake Forest, Tulsa, Maryland
Dropped out: Wake Forest, Illinois, TCU, Colorado, East Carolina
No. 1: I think Alabama has done more (beating Clemson at a neutral site and Georgia on the road) than Oklahoma has done so far this season.
No. 10: The 1-loss teams are tough to rank. I put USC (No. 10), Georgia (11), Florida (13) and Ohio State (15) as my top 1-loss teams.
No. 14: Just felt the Broncos fit right about here. Tough to know where to place the undefeated non-BCS teams (BYU, Utah, Boise State) with the one-loss power teams (USC, Georgia, Florida, Ohio State).
No. 20-21: Had to keep Wisconsin ahead of Fresno State based on the Badgers victory two weeks ago.
No. 23-25: All these teams (Connecticut, Northwestern and Ball State) are undefeated, which gave them the edge on Oregon, Michigan State and Wake Forest - all of whom have one loss.

To whom it may concern,
Clearly the call by your lead announcer Joe Giansante, for the Boise State vs Oregon game this past September 20th, 2008, showed how low an announcer can go. The lack of class that he showed Boise State during the broadcast was extremely disrespectful to the Boise State Players, Coaches and Fans. Clearly the fact that Oregon was losing was not the opportunity to begin bashing Boise State and their future schedule. Last I checked both teams play in the FBS. Unfortunately, Mr. Giansante clearly misunderstands this. Boise State cannot help they play in the WAC. This program works hard if not harder then most to accomplish all that it has in its short time in the FBS. The schedule that Boise State Athletic Director Gene Bleymaier works to develop is a responsible schedule, which includes non conference games against Bowling Green, Souther Miss and Oregon (the latter are both road games) in 2008.
I suggest the Mr. Giansante show a little more professionalism by calling the game more neutral. I am all for the call every now and again, but this game was pitiful display of an announcer becoming bitter as his team lost. This was a great win by Boise State. This is not a Super Bowl for Boise State as the Super Bowl is an National Football League game. Boise State played a very good Oregon Duck team on the road and excelled in every facet of the game. This is just a tiny step in the evolution of the Boise State Football program, with an indefinite amount of steps left to go. For Mr, Giansante to discount a fine performance by the young men who played this past Saturday is not only insulting to Boise State, but to the University of Oregons players, coaches and fans, as well as the Oregon Sports Network. In closing Saturday was a great football game and I can only hope the next years game in Boise, ID can live up to the hype that will surround it. Thank You

Jeremiah Johnson and LeGarrette Blount each ran for three touchdowns and Oregon thrashed Washington State 63-14 on Saturday, embarrassing the woeful Cougars during their homecoming game. Jaison Williams caught two touchdown passes as Oregon (4-1, 2-0 Pac-10) rebounded from last weekend's loss to Boise State that knocked the Ducks out of the Top 25.

(9) Alabama at (2) Georgia (-7)
The game everyone is talking about this week. Its pretty simple to me. I dont think Georgia is that good. Alabama has been scary good this year. I do hate to put any trust in Nick Saban or John Parker Wilson, but oh well.
Pick: Alabama
(23) TCU at (3) Oklahoma (-18.5)
Oklahoma has looked incredibly dominant so far this year. However, TCU does have history against Oklahoma and have won their last two games in Norman. I dont necessarily believe that TCU can win this outright, but 18.5 points is an awful lot. Im betting TCU can keep it close.
Pick: TCU
Fresno State (-7.5) at UCLA
Yep, Fresnos still ranked in the AP poll. Yep, it took them 4 OTs to beat Toledo. Yep, they were the only thing keeping me from a perfect week last week. Theres a reason that Fresno has never won a WAC title (besides Boise State dominating them), and it has to do with the inconsistency they showed last week. UCLA is bad though, really bad.
Pick: Fresno State
New Mexico (-3) at New Mexico State
Huge intrastate rivalry in New Mexico. Make sure to check out Bleed Crimson for all the coverage you crave. Whats that? They care more about volleyball than football over there? I guess if Hal Mumme was our coach, we might feel the same way.
Pick: New Mexico due to Bleed Crimsons apathy
Nevada at UNLV (-4)
Its really difficult to build a national championship resume when other members of your conference dont hold up their end of the bargain. Is it too much to ask for Nevada to be decent and help us out? This will be Nevadas first game in three weeks that isnt against a ranked opponent. I havent seen anything yet to expect anything different.
Pick: UNLV
Idaho at San Diego State (-11)
Poor Idaho. They just cant seem to catch a break. Making national headlines for all the wrong reasons. Part of me wishes that Idaho was good to have that rivalry that many other teams have. Most of me, however, just wants them to go back to I-AA.
Pick: San Diego State
San Jose State at Hawaii (-3)
Could the time difference, the vacation locale, and the crazy locals throw off San Jose States game? Nah, Hawaiis going to be all hopped up on Coca-Cola.

When I heard that the Builder 100 list was going to be published online, I was nervous and excited all at once. Where would we land, I wondered? 2007 was a challenging year for the entire real estate industry nationwide. But I knew we had a good year considering, and that our economy in Idaho was in much better shape than in many parts of the United States.
I am proud to say CBH Homes ranked No. 67 among all home-building companies nationwide, with 833 home sales in 2007! Despite the testing market, we held strong and kept the same position from 2006. CBH also maintained its position as the No. 1 home builder in Idaho.
Here’s a link to the complete list
We were ranked just above Avata Holdings of Coral Gables, FL, No. 68, with 780 homes and just below Polygon Northwest Co. of Bellevue, WA who climbed up the list to No. 66, with 849 home sales.
Along the way we have tried a number of innovative techniques to keep home sales moving along, including selling homes on eBay last August and discounting prices from $30,000 to $70,000 per home in a single weekend campaign titled “Deal of a Lifetime” in October 2007. We’ve also redesigned our website to provide more information to the user and held a Guitar Hero tournament at our Square One center to attract young first-time buyers.
Flexibility is our key to success in a market that bends and sways in all directions. We are constantly listening to our customers and searching for new ways to improve and stay on top of the market.

So, those of you that have had more than a beer or two with me lately know that for the last year or so I have become intrigued with the so called sabremetrics (or statistical) approach to looking at baseball performances. My interest in this topic has been fired by the Seattle Mariners blog community. It turns out that the two biggest blogs covering the Mariners both take a decidedly statistical approach to analyzing baseball performances. From there I started thinking about and looking into what work has been done in this realm for other sports. This post is a discussion of the new thinking as it applies to the Portland Trailblazers.
Before discussing where the Blazers are and where they could be going, it would be helpful to give a basic description of what new statistics I am talking about and why things like points per game should become obsolete in the near future much as ERA has.
Some of the my favorite work to date has been done looking at offensive and defensive efficiency. The concept is this: Basic statistics measure how many points a team scores and how many points a team gives up. But, these numbers doesn't exist in a vacuum, and teams that score fewer points don't necessarily have worse offenses. If a team is more deliberate in it's offense, if it uses more of the shot clock each trip down the floor, that team will have fewer overall possessions then a team that shots quickly (like the Suns of the last couple of years). Even a team that is efficient in terms of how it uses it's possessions may score fewer points in a game than a less efficient, but faster team.
Since a game is of a defined length (48 minutes in the NBA) it isn't too difficult to calculate the number of possessions per game a team gets (See here: http://www.basketball-reference.com/abou t/glossary.html for the formula)* Once we know how many possessions a team has in an average game we can look at how many points per possession a team generates. Although this could be a useful measure, most sites extrapolate out to points scored per 100 possessions to compare across teams. This is useful not just to see how efficient an offense is, but it can also be used as a measure of team defense. Looking at offensive and defensive efficiency will give you a basic measure of a teams health.
Although there are other advanced statistics that bear discussion, today I am going to talk about The Four Factors. This is a concept advanced by Dean Oliver in his book Basketball on Paper. Now, this discussion should come with the caveat that I haven't read that book yet. As such, this discussion will be somewhat cursory.

Reefer madness followup ... two Penn State players charged with possession of marijuana ... how will Paterno react? ... DE Maurice Evans' absence didn't exactly hurt the Nitaly Lions' effort vs. OS(U).
WEDNESDAY .. an off day for Oregon State, as the deserted campus (DOES ANYBODY GO TO SCHOOL AROUND HERE?) braces for No. 1-ranked USC's arrival in eight days. ... still no sign of Sammie's David and Goliath stones, but it's early.
I have heard that an NFL general manager has told OSU coach Mike Riley that he would rather face the Oakland Raiders' front seven than face USC's front seven.
Comment: as coach would say, oh boy.
Riley told me, after practice Tuesday, that he's heard all three starting LBs on USC will go in the first round of the NFL draft. ... OLB Brian Cushing (6-3, 255), MLB Rey Maualuga (6-2, 260), and OLB Kaluka Maiava (6-0, 230). Note ... Maualuga says he's down to 247, or thereabouts, but he's listed on USC's depth chart at 260.
Comment: as coach would say, oh boy.

Going to Eugene this weekend to watch the Broncos game? Have you packed your mace?
Were concerned for the well-being of the brave Boise State football fans who are risking life, limb, and ridicule of their mothers to see the Broncos play in person. Autzen is a scary place to visit, especially if youre not wearing tacky neon yellow. The Ducks stadium is known as one of the toughest places in America to play, and it will be a-rocking on Saturday.
Be careful, Bronco fans. Wed hate to turn on the news tomorrow night and see that the Whose House? guy was tarred and feathered on the bronze statue of Dan Fouts sitting in downtown Eugene.
Wed hate for any harm to befall any of you. If we remember anything from our trips into enemy territory for Bronco away games, it is that opposing fans are mean, they assume untrue things about your relationship with potatoes, and their vocabularies are crudely monosyllabic. (Note to UW fans: means one syllable, and means oh, never mind.)
No doubt that at some point on Saturday, a Bronco fan will be accosted verbally, physically, or emotionally, and we wish more than anything that we could be there right beside you with a witty comeback. Unfortunately, this will not be the case as we will be safely tucked away in our home and we dont think of witty comebacks until hours and sometimes days after the fact.
But you know what? More power to you for representing the Broncos and for taking the ridicule and persecution like a man (or woman)(or creepy horse mascot). Go ahead and wear your Marty Tadman replica jersey to dinner at Eugenes finest steakhouse. Who cares if the maitre d thinks youre a hick? Be proud of that hastily-created BSU anagram sign you made. So what if a Duck fan purposefully spills beer on it? Feel free to start the cheer in your section of four Bronco fans. Actually, on second thought, dont do that. That would be embarrassing.
Just whatever you do, make sure you come back to Boise in one piece. And dont cross the Oregon Duck mascot.

Pitchfork Nationis hosting this week. Here goes"
The Pacific-10 Conference expanded to its current state in 1978 when Arizona and Arizona State left the WAC to create the dysfunctional family we now are all members of today. In the 30 years in our current state, I think it's pretty obvious that we did not see a weekend as pathetic as we did last week when seven teams lost, four of them to Mountain West Conference foes, one as a 25 1/2 point favorite, one to Baylor (no more explanation needed) and one which was their worst loss since the Great Depression.
Thankfully, last week is over and we move on to this weekend, where there's a primetime televised matchup (Georgia/ASU), a middling conference game and three others. The question is, how does the conference save face this week?
Conquest Chronicles, if you feel like stretching out and passing on this question, feel free. You're more than excused
Hey now, can we be excused? I know it wasn't pretty, but we did go on the road a beat a BCS school. We held up our end of the bargain!
It was a bad weekend in terms of national perception. The bottom half of this conference in downright putrid. UW and WSU are two of the worst BCS teams in teh country, so you have to hold out hope that OSU, Stanford, Arizona, or UCLA can make some headway. You'd like to see one or two of those teams do okay, because if we couldn't fill in all our bowl slots, that would be embarrassing. I don't know what to make of ASU now, there was no excuse to lose that game. And, while Cal is suspect defensively, I still think they'll be okay.
But USC is clearly #1 with a big gap, and Oregon is clearly #2 with a big gap to #3. The damage of last weekend was done, and it won't be undone in a week (unless maybe ASU pulls off a miracle against Georgia.

The Broncos (1-0) are coming off a 49-7 win versus Idaho State to take on the Bowling Green Falcons (1-1) from the Mid American Conference. The way I see it, this game will be a huge test for the Broncos, as Bowling Green is coming off a 1-1 non conference start against BCS opponents, Pittsburgh and Minnesota. Many questions surround this game. Could Bowling Green hand the Broncos their first regular season home loss since 2001? Will the Jumbo Tron be working? Will game time programs be given away or will Boise State Athletics try to squeeze every dollar it can out of Bronco Nation? Can Bowling Green Head Coach Greg Brandon become Urban Meyer?
The Facts:
On September 21st, 2008, the only meeting between Boise State and Bowling Green, the Broncos won 48-20. The dominate win was the first of the season for the 2005 Broncos and it could not have come at a more critical time. Bronco Fans got a taste of things to come as Ian Johnson, a Freshman, ran for 85 yards. The Falcons are led by 2007 third-team All-MAC performer, Junior QB Tyler Sheehan, who passed for 23 touchdowns, to go along with 3,264 yards, three rushing touchdowns, and two receiving scores (the only QB in the Country to do so). The Falcons were 8-5 last year starting the season off with a 32-31 upset win over the Minnesota Golden Gophers and then ending the season by suffering a GMAC Bowl loss to the Tulsa Golden Hurricane 63-7, proving taking on teams with Golden in their names is harder then one would think.

Titus Young was suspended for Saturdays game against Bowling Green, and being the motherly fanbase that we are, we expect an apology.
Go ahead, Titus, whenever youre ready.
Well just be waiting here, flipping through our JCPenney winter catalog.

La-tee-la-da-dah.
Hurry up. We have very important, nerdy podcast things to do at 8:45.
That apology isnt coming is it? We feared as much when we got the overwhelming feeling that Youngs indiscretion was being quietly and discreetly swept under the rug. Where the outcry from hyper-sensitive fans? Wheres the Chadd Cripe four-page Statesman memorandum? Wheres the accountability?
Jeremy Childs didnt get off the hook this easily. When Childs was held out of the Hawaii Bowl, fans stormed the figurative gates of Morality U to find the answers. Was it because the Broncos lost the game that Childs missed? Perhaps if Bowling Green had pulled the upset Saturday night, we would be reading in todays papers about Youngs sincere regret for a Guitar Hero party gone bad.
Instead, all we got was a violation of team rules.
We suppose team rules could mean fumbling twice against a Division I-AA team, but it is highly unlikely that our sophomoric attempts at humor could actually translate into a serious reason for suspension. And really, we dont need to know what Young did (we live vicariously through Kellen Moore, remember?); we just need to know that hes sorry.
Young has become a face of this Boise State team, and regardless of his age or class, he has the expectations of an entire fanbase on his shoulders. There was no uproar when Toshi Franklin and Keith McGowen were suspended for the opener because no one really knew who those two were. Titus Young is different, so we expected a different response.
Specifically, we had the following in mind:
m sorry for my actions that caused me to miss Saturdays game against Bowling Green and for possibly playing a hand in the Broncos not covering the 17-point spread. Id like to thank the Bronco fans for their continued support, especially those funny guys over at OBNUG. I read your blog every day.
If anyone is interested, I will be at the Country Club Reel tonight watching Hancock with Austin Pettis and Tanyon Bissell. You all are invited. I will bring yogurt raisins.
Now, would that have been so hard.

[13 Sep 2008 | 22 Comments | 34 views] Welcome to the official OBNUG live-blog! Refresh this page for constant updates, and feel free to leave comments throughout. Enjoy!
Pregame: David Augusto just said that Titus Young is suspended from this game for breaking team rules. Looks like he wont be fumbling tonight, at least. Jeremy Childs will certainly have a lot more balls thrown his way, but I kind of felt that Kellen Moore was getting some chemistry with Young. If anything it helps Bowling Green.
Mark Johnson just called Coach Pete the man in this mission. What in the world does that mean?
First Quarter
14:00: Bowling Green received. There sure is a lot of room in the middle of that Bronco D-Line. Ryan Winterwsyk is there, but those holes up the middle are huge.
13:03: Oh good, there are WAC officials doing the game. That should come in handy later.
11:45: Derrell Acrey just hobbled off after Bowling Green picked up another first down.
9:25: Upright for MVP! Boise State avoids falling down early thanks to a great save by the upright on the Falcons field goal attempt. Still, BG had some good momentum on the drive. They might be able to run at will this game.
7:00: Jeremy Avery already has two carries, and it looks like the Broncos will try to establish the run more tonight. Is it because Nate Potter is back? Is it because Chrissy Popadics got to the Bronco coaches?
4:55: Could Mark Johnson use any more enthusiasm in saying Kellen Moores name? My goodness, it sounds like hes falling out of his announcing chair every time Moore comes up in conversation.
4:30: What a great call for a middle screen. Third and five, and it looks like Bowling Green expected nothing. First and goal. I love being a Broncos fan.
