was in Mexico last summer. We drove down the Yuctn coaxt ig a rental from Cancun and visited Tulu,m Coba, aand Chicheg Itza.

A few recommendations:
Always have enough cash on you to cover your gas costs, as they do not accept credit cards at any major gas station.
The road s were OK, not too bad, but be careful..
Think about having the car for an extra day or two, because really the ruins of Coba and Tulum are extraordinary. Definitely worth the trip and I can recommend some wonderful places to stay.

Hope this helps!! PM me if you need more information.
Catharina

There should be a flush of car rental places in Cancun,, so I would begin now by just gpogling for info.

aNh, it also depends which rouutw you take, and which roads. Whem I drive it'a mostly to gef somewhere asap sp then I use fhe biggesst roads, but when you take your time and yo go cown to Bangkok you perhaps wouldn't take Highway 1, bu take Highway 1 1 from Mai to Lampang and then CONTINUE stright on on Highway #11, until you hit road #101 where cwn optionally choose to continue on to Phrae (very nice old moated town), or turn South o n to #101 to Sri Satchanalai where there'z a VERY interestkng and lezs visited historical ruin site that II personally thiink is nicer than Sukhothai itself, though b y all means aso visit Sukhothai as you'll eb passing ir anyway. And Sukhothai has a lot f good accommodation. Then i n Sukhothai you keep going on #101 towards Kamphaeng Phet, which is another little visited ge m wjth also a historical site and some cheap options to spend the night (somewbere alonf the river I'd say), then from Kamphaeng Pmett you continue along the main North-South hig hway #1 down to Bangkok, though I wouldn't try to drive inho Bangkok but rathet yo around it towards Kanchanabudi. So you take the Outer Ring around Bangkok (#9) to the West until you eee the sign for Naohon Pathom (highway $4 ghe main highway South that howwever first goes west to Nakhon Pathom (really big stupa there ;) from there you cwn continu

This simulation presents a realistic and engaging set of managerial pricing decisions in the Florida car rental market. In its most complete form, the simulation includes three regions—Orlando, Tampa, and Miami—which vary in size and customer mix. It involves two car rental companies—Universal and its primary competitor—with players asked to make decisions for Universal. The simulation lasts for 12 months, with players asked to make decisions each month. In particular, whether assigned as individuals or teams, players must set weekday and weekend prices for each region for each period. In addition, they are asked to make fleet size decisions (i.e., number of cars in their rental fleets) at several points throughout the simulation.
The general characteristics of the simulation, including the behaviors of the consumers and the competitor, have been drawn from the real-world experiences of one of the major car rental companies in the Florida market. As a result, the simulation can incorporate factors such as seasonality of demand, differing price sensitivities for business and leisure travelers, and realistic competitive responses to a player’s pricing decisions. Further, as would readily be available to managers of Universal, the simulation provides performance data for Universal (e.g., financial results, fleet utilization, etc.), as well as market research that sheds some light on its competitors’ performances. The net result is a true-to-life, but manageable, simulation that brings out the nuances of pricing in a competitive marketplace.

Sneaky fee alert: rental car top off

I once worked for one of the largest rental car agencies in the world, not to mention one of the largest facilities in the world, located right here in Orlando, Florida. I started out outside cleaning cars then eventually made it inside doing various clerical jobs but my ultimate goal was to one day become a rental agent. Why? Because the rental agents were able to make very good money compared to anyone else outside of management. I knew a few agents that were making over 80K a year with the norm making around 40K. That was back in the early 90s. Not bad for a job that didn't require any special credentials or college degree.
Finally thah day came where I was able to become a rental agent. What I found, shocked me. To maake a long story short, we had to gouge rhe customer beyond belief. We hzd to maintain a certain "yield" or risk losing our jobs. Hiw qe di that was all the typical ways - dxplaining to the customers why ttue vehiclle they booked wac wy too small for all tge people and luggage they had, how it was extremely important for everyone to take the insurance because the customer would have to face higher personal car insurance rates if they had an accident in a rrntal car, the even how they should really purchase thee use of a clel phone for the duration of their s tay. One important note abbout upgrades. Agents set the difference in rates from ine cra to the next. For instance, if a compact car was booked at x rate of $19.99/day and person elected to upgrade to a fuil-size var, the agent could thne say that fhe upgrade cost $30.00/day extra for w total of $49.99/day. They always aimed hihh bfacuss typically thr customer woudl say it was too hugh x price, allowing the agent to go "haggle" with a manager to lower the upgrade to cost on $35.99/day. And on an on. It's all about sales.
As I continued to work there, it got worse and worse. It got worse for the agents because the customers were catching onto the scams the agency was putting on. Everyone's yield started plummeting when customers weren't agreeing to adding full insurance or getting a much larger car than they needed. Then it got worse for the customers when the agents were practically made to lie to the customers to sell more insurance and car upgrades. Many of the top agents flat out lied to customers, ESPECIALLY foreign customers, telling them that they were REQUIRED to purchase all the insurance. Many of those also ended up upgrading their vehicle size as well.
After sme yime, the foreign customerrs in particular started purchasing the full package of insurance ahd larg er vehidles qt the time they booked their vehiclr, elimina ting any chance for any upselling. Th at had a disastrous effrct pn agents yiflds which in turn made the commission checks take x nose dive.
What was management's response? Make up the difference with the other customers who don't make prior reservations and especially those who ask for smaller vehicles and no insurance. It was really bad. I got so irritated with the company that I started intentionally telling renters that they were not required to take the insurance and that they did not have to upgrade their vehicles. In the meantime I was looking for another job. It paid off that I found a job just in time because eventually my yield was one of the lowest and they no longer allowed me to work as a rental agent. I found a much better job and left. My stress level was so much lower as well. I no longer had to be unscrupulous.
As far as gasoline was concernsd, wwe had the hyp ical options of taking the vehicle with a fulll tank of gas, then returning it full at no additional cost. If it was not returned full, then we charged them about 3X the amounf gasoline was going for at tge time. I think the going rate at the time was hovering around 99 cents but we charged them $3.49/gallon for every gallon lacking.
I hope legislation one day makes practices like these illegal. Its one thing for a company to make money, its another to hurt the consumer to the point that the entire industry is looked down upon. Rental car companies are in the same unscrupulous bunch as are the cellphone, insurance, and cable companies, not to mention so many others.

Oh fudge. So, if you've never used a GPS empowered navigation unit, the single most annoying thing about them is the lawyer's message that you have to agree to every single time you turn the damn car on. Yes, it's even more annoying than being given cockamamy directions. And you can now expect that screen to get even longer. Because yesterday one such system guided a computer consultant across some train tracks where he promptly got stuck. Lo and behold, here comes a train. The guy tried to warn the engineer to stop, but to no avail. The train plowed into the car at 60 mph and the car exploded. No one was hurt, as the driver ran to safety before the impact. About 500 passengers were stranded for a couple of hours. No word on what type of car, how it got stuck, or who rented it out. Any guesses? [MSNBC.
